Since 2015, Lovie Baker has worked as the principal category manager at Exelon Corporation, located in Warrenville, Illinois. When she is not working, Lovie Baker enjoys hiking with her dog. Consider these three tips for a safe and fun hike with your dog.
1. Food and Water - Staying hydrated and well energized is as important for your dog during a hike as it is for you. Periodically take breaks to give your dog water and food. Consider splitting up a normal meal’s worth of food and treats to last the hike, giving him a small portion with each break.
2. Start Small - You may be a seasoned hiker, but your dog’s regular walks around the block likely have not prepared him for a demanding hike. Start your dog off on beginner trails that are less challenging and demanding, then work your way up to the harder routes.
3. Pack Animal - Your dog can help carry the load and ease the weight burden on you with bags specially designed for dogs. Generally speaking, dogs can comfortably carry about a third of their weight. Distribute the weight evenly between the pack’s two bags, and make sure the pack is secured snugly, but not so tight that it will cause chafing or discomfort.
